We celebrated 50 years of Title IX this year - If you are unfamiliar, please read about it here: https://www.history.com/news/title-nine-womens-sports
What an incredible transformation of women's sports. Only 50 years ago, women were at a significant disadvantage to have the same opportunities to play sports as boys and men. From a positive perspective, what an incredible journey traveled toward equality in this space. However, as we know, in particular geographic locations or environments, we still have a long way to go.
Just last year, University of Oregon's, Sedona Prince went next level viral by sharing the disparity in the difference in weight rooms, food, swag and overall experience of the NCAA Women's Basketball tournament compared to the men's...in 2021. Kudos to her for sharing and kudos to her school for standing behind her. It is so important to understand the history so we can impact the future. As a former college athlete, I had opportunities to play whichever sport I wanted and did not for one second think that I should not or would not...but that is credit to the generations before us. Just a short time ago prior generations of women did not have the same opportunities. Girls deserve to be on the field, court, pool, arena, course, rink, track...wherever their hearts desire. Let's keep girls playing...they deserve it.
